Eating Out in Venice

The colourful Rialto Markets
More Venice Photos
Considering that Venice is a city that is swarming with tourists literally twelve months a year, it will come as no surprise to learn that you will find it extremely hard to come across a bargain when it comes to eating out. Every restaurant either has a ‘menu touristic’ (tourist menu), and if not they will impose some charge on to your bill, such as cover charge or service charge.

Tourist menus generally consist of two courses – antipasta and main course. Antipasta will be a choice of four pasta-based dishes. Lasagna usually appears here. Second course then comprises of veal or chicken, and this comes with a salad. Such a menu will set you back somewhere in the region of €13, but you can be sure your bill will amount to much more than that. If you order ‘menu touristic’ for the sum of €13, expect the bill to come to €18 – €13 for the food, another €3 for a drink, then another €2 for service charge. Most of the time you are better off simply going for a pizza.

If your budget can’t stretch to a meal in a restaurant, fear not as this city is the snack-master’s dream come true. ‘Snack bars’ abound every corner. Dealing in all types of paninis and all flavours of pizza, if you only have €4 to feed yourself with you will be guaranteed to get something to fill you.

If you want to eat how the Venetians eat, try out some ‘cichetti’ which is basically a local delicacy extremely similar to Spanish tapas. Each portion costs in the region of €2 and you can choose from meatballs, squid, and more. Keep an eye out for ‘osterias’ as most of these sell wide a wide range of cichetti.
